What's a valley?

In the Pays de Caux, a valley is a depression in the land that provides access to the sea. On the rest of the coast, this access is prevented by the height of the chalk cliffs.

A distinction is made between :

  • valleuses vives: natural depressions (Fécamp, Yport, Étretat…) ;
  • dead valleys: access to the shore requires human intervention (stairs, etc.);
  • perched valleys : simple depressions in the terrain that do not, or no longer, allow access to the shore.
