The largest and best-preserved of the Roman amphitheatres north of the Loire, measuring nearly 108 metres long by 94 metres wide, is located in Lillebonne. It bears witness to the grandeur of the ancient city of Juliobona. Built in the 1st century, it was modified and enlarged in the 2nd and 3rd centuries, then abandoned and converted into a fortress to defend the city. In its heyday and until recently, several thousand spectators could take their seats in the stands to watch all manner of performances. The ruins are fully visible from the square.
